What is a Pound Auction?

Alegna Soap® Pound Auction

My mom goes to the Bellmore Senior Center a few days a week. The center has different activities for the seniors in the Town of Hempstead.

Some of the activities include: physical fitness classes, humanities discussions, current events, history, music, arts and crafts, dance, piano lessons, showtime, painting, ceramics, sewing, needle craft, macramé, sculpture, calligraphy, creative writing, poetry, shuffleboard, bowling, billiards, bingo, cards, inter-generational programs, luncheons, parties and trips. A variety of cultural and educational programs, films and speakers are also available. The centers offer blood pressure screenings, health programs, income tax assistance and Vial of Life programs.

I even showed the seniors how to make soap at one meeting.  But last week, they had their pound auction to raise money for the center.  I asked my mom “What is a pound auction?”  She told me everyone brings in a pound of something wrapped up pretty and it gets auctioned off.  You don’t know what is inside the box.  All you know is that it weighs a pound.  She told me in the past people have wrapped up rocks, pasta, boxes of stationary, coffee, clothespins, candy and anything else that weighs one pound.

I told my mom I’d give her a one pound bag of my soap ends for the auction. She thought it was a great idea. She donated a total of 5 different boxes. I think she spread the word that one of them may be soap, because my box went for $5.00.

This week I’m grateful my mom has the senior center to go to, and I was able to help them raise money for some of the activities they do.  The pound auction raised $140.00 for the center and the seniors will use the money for lunches, coffee and cake. I’m also grateful the lady who got my soap was happy about it.

What are you grateful for this week?

Yours in Gratitude,

Angela

Thanks Leana! I love the idea that you don’t know what your buying, only that it weighs a pound. Fun!
