I love to read and I love books. My mom will tell you I spent my childhood in the library. I think that’s because my dad told me I could learn to do anything as long as I could read. Remember, this is way before computers, Google and YouTube. I still love to read books and in my opinion, a day spent in the library is a great day. It’s also where I first found most of my favorite soap making books.
My Favorite Soap Making Books
My latest favorite soap making book was written by a friend of mine. The Complete Guide to Natural Soapmaking by Amanda Gail Aaron. This is the most recent “soap making 101” book I own. Plenty of great recipes using natural ingredients, lots of colorful pictures and new techniques to try. Amanda gives step-by-step tutorials too. Perfect for a new soap maker or a more experienced one too
The Complete Soapmaker by Norma Coney. This was the book that started me on my soapy journey. It’s an old book, and a bit out of date. There are corrections to some of the safety instructions listed, but I love it for sentimental reasons.
The next book is The Soapmakers Companion by Susan Miller Cavitch. My copy is well worn and a little beat up. It’s easy to follow and talks about many soap making types and techniques.
Scientific Soapmaking by Kevin Dunn is a slow book to read, but well worth the investment of time. Especially if you’re a soap geek like me. Kevin talks about the chemistry of soap making in language that a non-science major can understand.
My Favorite Natural Perfume Making Books
I thought I’d throw these in because I find the natural perfume books help me when I blend scents for soap making. Essence & Alchemy by Mandy Aftel and Artisan Perfumery by Alec Lawless are t wo of my favorites. If you love soap making, you probably also love scent blending. Both these books are worth the read.
